Our Process

How does the book design process work?

From manuscript to published book on Amazon, our process covers every stage. Most single-title projects take four to six weeks from brief to live listing.

Brief & Discovery

We review your manuscript, discuss your audience and genre, establish the trim size and format, and define the visual direction for your cover and interior.

Cover Design

Custom cover concepts developed — front, spine, and back as a complete wrap. Two rounds of revisions included. Illustration, typography, and colour palette tailored to your book's content and market.

Interior Formatting

Full typesetting and layout: chapter openings, running headers, page numbers, table of contents, front and back matter. Output as print-ready PDF and reflowable ebook.

KDP Setup & Launch

Cover template with calculated spine width, trim and bleed configuration, ISBN metadata, and upload to your Amazon KDP dashboard. Files pass review first time.

Why TDS Australia

Why choose a design agency for your book instead of a template?

Amazon KDP's Cover Creator and template-based tools get you published, but they don't get you noticed. With over 11,000 books published daily on Amazon, professional design is the single biggest factor in whether a reader stops scrolling.

TDS Australia is an award-winning brand design agency recognised by DesignRush and the International Design Awards. We bring the same strategic design thinking to book covers that we apply to brand identities for startups, enterprises, and institutions. Every cover is designed from scratch — no templates, no stock composites, no AI-generated imagery.

Our experience spans fiction and non-fiction, single titles and multi-book series, faith-based publishing and commercial non-fiction. We've handled series of up to twelve titles with full KDP pipeline management, and we design for both the Australian and international self-publishing markets.

Platform Support

Which print-on-demand platforms do you design for?

We prepare publication-ready files for all major self-publishing and print-on-demand platforms. Each has different technical specifications for cover dimensions, bleed, colour profiles, and interior formatting — and we handle the differences so you don't have to.

Supported platforms include Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) for paperback, hardcover, and Kindle ebook; IngramSpark for global bookstore distribution; Barnes & Noble Press; Lulu; Draft2Digital; Apple Books; and Kobo Writing Life. We also format for independent Australian printers if you need physical stock outside of print-on-demand.

FAQ

Common questions about book cover design and KDP publishing

Professional book cover design in Australia typically costs between $500 and $3,000 AUD depending on complexity. At TDS Australia, custom book cover design packages start from $800 AUD for a single title, with discounts available for multi-book series. This includes front cover, back cover, spine design, and KDP-compliant PDF files.
Book interior formatting includes chapter layout and typesetting, page numbering, headers and footers, table of contents, front matter and back matter design, custom chapter opening illustrations (optional), and export as both print-ready PDF for Amazon KDP paperback and reflowable EPUB or MOBI for Kindle ebook.
Yes. TDS Australia handles the complete Amazon KDP publishing pipeline including cover template generation with accurate spine width calculations, trim size and bleed configuration, ISBN metadata setup, print-ready PDF preparation, Kindle ebook formatting, and dashboard upload for review and publication.
We deliver print-ready PDF files at 300 DPI for paperback and hardcover covers, a PDF interior formatted to KDP trim size specifications with correct bleed and margins, a reflowable EPUB or MOBI file for Kindle ebook, and source design files upon request. All files meet Amazon KDP's technical requirements.
Absolutely. Series design is one of our specialties. We create a unified visual identity system across all titles, with a cohesive design language that gives each book its own distinct character while maintaining shelf recognition as a collection. Our Richard Green project involved 12 books designed as a unified series.
A single book cover design typically takes 2 to 3 weeks from brief to final files. Interior formatting takes an additional 1 to 2 weeks depending on page count and complexity. Full KDP setup adds 3 to 5 business days. Multi-book series timelines are scoped individually based on the number of titles.
Yes. While Amazon KDP is our most requested platform, we also prepare files for IngramSpark, Barnes & Noble Press, Lulu, Draft2Digital, Apple Books, and Kobo. Each platform has slightly different technical specifications, and we ensure full compliance for whichever platforms you choose.
An ebook cover is a single front-facing image optimised for digital display at thumbnail size. A paperback cover is a full wrap design including front cover, spine with calculated width based on page count and paper type, and back cover with blurb, barcode area, and ISBN. Both require different technical specifications and we deliver both as part of our KDP packages.
