Richard Green has spent decades pastoring one of Sydney's established C3 churches. When he came to TDS with a collection of manuscripts, each one distilled from years of ministry, mentoring, and lived theology, the brief wasn't just to design covers. It was to build a visual identity for an entire library of thought.
The challenge was both creative and practical: how do you give twelve books a cohesive shelf presence without making them feel like carbon copies of each other? Each title carries a distinct message — from the intimacy of parenting to the architecture of church leadership — and the design needed to honour that range while making the series unmistakably his.

The Illustration Language
We developed a custom hand-drawn illustration style for the series: loose, gestural line art rendered in a single-weight black stroke.
Each cover features one symbolic illustration — a winding mountain path, a tangled knot of thread, a family gathered around a table, a solitary footprint — that distils the book’s central metaphor into a single visual moment.
The illustrations deliberately resist the polished, stock-image look that saturates the Christian publishing space. There are no glowing sunsets. No clasped hands in soft focus. Instead, the line work has the quality of something sketched in the margins of a sermon notebook — personal, unhurried, human. This was an intentional departure from the visual clichés of faith-based publishing, designed to feel approachable to readers inside and outside the church.
Each illustration operates as visual shorthand. Before the Stage features a humble cup beneath a spotlight — the hidden, unglamorous formation that precedes public leadership. Tangled Love renders a knot of grey and red thread — the mess and beauty of complicated relationships. The Long Walk of Love gathers a multigenerational family in a single continuous line — parents, children, and grandparents as one unbroken story. The Passing Baton reduces leadership succession to an interlocking chain link in motion. Faith Moves plants a single footprint — faith as forward movement, not static belief. Moral Voltage depicts a weathered clay vessel — character as something shaped by hand, cracked and imperfect but capable of holding what matters.
The illustration for The Shepherd’s Peace is the most understated of the series: a low, hand-sketched line of grass — suggesting rest, pasture, and the quiet presence of Psalm 23 without literalising it. The Path of Discipleship traces a road winding through mountain ridgelines, a journey with contour and elevation. Unseen Realms forgoes line art entirely, using a marble-like cloud texture to evoke the liminal, the atmospheric, the not-quite-visible. Prophetic Whispers renders the movement of breath or wind — swirling, ornamental curls of air that evoke the Spirit’s voice as something felt before it’s understood, invisible but unmistakably present.
Two covers in the series push the illustration language further. Sparrows Still Sing breaks from the monochrome line-art approach with a fully rendered sparrow in mid-flight — wings spread, feathers detailed in warm browns and ochres — framed by organic yellow shapes against a white ground. The typography shifts too: bold, condensed sans-serif in black, a deliberate contrast to the elegant serifs used across the rest of the series. This was a conscious choice. The book’s message — finding lasting joy even in hardship — demanded something more kinetic and immediate, and the sparrow’s upward energy delivers that viscerally. It’s the most illustrative cover in the collection, and it earns its difference by anchoring it in the biblical motif of God’s care for even the smallest creature.
Colour as Theology
Rather than applying a single brand colour across the series, we assigned each book its own monochromatic palette, one dominant colour that carries the emotional and thematic weight of the title.
Before the Stage lives in a warm, burnt orange — the colour of clay, of formation, of things being shaped before they’re seen.
The Path of Discipleship uses a saturated blue-violet, evoking depth, commitment, and the vastness of the journey from table fellowship to global mission.
Tangled Love is starkly minimal: white ground with crimson type, the red thread of desire and consequence against a clean, almost clinical backdrop.
The Long Walk of Love is a tender, dusty pink — warmth without sentimentality, the softness of family life held honestly.
The Passing Baton is dressed in muted gold — authority, legacy, the weight of what’s handed on.
The Shepherd’s Peace is the quietest cover in the series, rendered in a pale, misty blue — sky, breath, stillness.
Faith Moves inverts expectations with a deep crimson ground and mint green type — urgency grounded in freshness, conviction with forward energy.
Financial Wisdom takes sage green, a colour of growth, maturity, and measured abundance.
Unseen Realms pairs a clouded periwinkle with warm cream — heaven and earth in soft collision.
Moral Voltage is dressed in a warm, earthy ochre — the colour of fired clay, of things tested and proved, grounding the book’s focus on character and virtue in something elemental.
Sparrows Still Sing is the brightest in the series: a sunny, saturated yellow paired with black and white — joy as something bold, unapologetic, and impossible to overlook.
Prophetic Whispers shares the warm coral-orange family with Before the Stage but pushes it brighter and more vivid — the colour of embers, of something burning quietly beneath the surface, paired with cream type that softens the intensity into invitation rather than alarm.
The result is a series that reads as a unified collection when displayed together — the tonal range creates a natural spectrum — while each individual volume stands alone with its own distinct atmosphere.
Interior Design & Chapter Formatting
The interior formatting was designed to match the covers' restraint and intentionality.
Each chapter opens with a custom illustration in the same hand-drawn style as the cover art, reinforcing the visual language throughout the reading experience. Typography was kept clean and readable — serif headings with generous spacing, body text set for long-form reading comfort, and running headers styled to feel like a natural extension of the cover design.
The formatting was built for dual output: a print-ready interior for Amazon KDP’s paperback specifications and a reflowable digital edition for Kindle. Page dimensions, margin tolerances, bleed settings, and spine calculations were configured to KDP’s technical requirements across all twelve titles, each with varying page counts.
Amazon KDP Setup
Beyond the design work, TDS handled the full Amazon KDP publishing pipeline for the series.
This included preparing print-ready PDF files to KDP’s exact trim size and bleed specifications, configuring ISBN metadata, formatting front and back matter (title pages, copyright, contents, and back cover copy), generating KDP-compliant cover templates with accurate spine widths calculated per title, and uploading each book through the KDP dashboard for review and publication.
The goal was to remove every technical barrier between Richard’s manuscripts and his readers — so that when the books went live, the experience of holding one felt as considered as the words inside it. Across twelve titles with varying page counts and trim requirements, the production pipeline had to be repeatable without becoming formulaic — each book received individual attention within a system built for consistency.
